My idea for a new mapping system
Tuesday 6th July 2010
Based off this old game I used to play as a kid called Muzzle Velocity, I've always loved how simple and square the maps were.
Another game I played as a kid called Combat Mission 2: Barbarossa to Berlin had an awesome inbuilt map editor that allowed the user to build simple 3 dimensional worlds by placing a 2 dimensional representation of an object on a bored in a grid.

My idea is similar to this; but at the moment it's not going to be an entirely new mapping system, but a simpler program that will compile the .XML output from a third party program known as tiled in to a single .OBJ file, and then it will utilise graphics components like irrlicht.net to render the world in a 'world viewer' which will most likely be written with VisualBasic.net and run on the .net framework.
I've decided to call it PCOMMS; which will stand for pre-cast object model mapping system.
I hope that once it's in the Bata stage I will be able to start developing a game (most likely with VisualBasic.net and the irrlicht.net engine) with game play like that of Muzzle Velocity, a throwback to my childhood.
